5th Grade Classroom News

5th Grade September Newsletter

The Fifth Grade Team would like to start off by thanking all of the parents that came to our Open House.  It was great to meet many of you and we are looking forward to discussing your child’s progress with you more at conference time in November.  Also, a big thank you to any families that are making donations to our classrooms.  We greatly appreciate it!

Coming up in September in Reading and Language Arts, we will continue to work on reading strategies.  So far we have worked on finding the main idea and key details in a story.  We are currently working on summarizing fiction and nonfiction stories and articles.  We have started guided reading this week where we will work in small groups at the students’ reading level and using these skills and strategies at the guided reading table.  Students have been practicing guided reading stations and they have been using the chromebooks on websites such as newsela, typing club, and flocabulary.  In writing this week, we are learning about the 6 traits of writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions) and we will begin looking at our first key quality for Ideas, which is finding a topic.

In Math, the fifth graders are currently working on Topic 2 in math, which is adding and subtracting decimals.  Topic 3 will introduce multiplication.  We strongly encourage parents to be practicing math facts at home with your child.  They have to have a good foundation of the multiplication and division facts because it will help them throughout the rest of the year in math.

In Social Studies, we began to learn about the events that led up to the American Revolution. We will discuss reasons why the colonists continued to be angry with King George III and how these tensions will eventually lead to the American Revolution.  The students will be working on Google Classroom to submit different projects, graphic organizers, watch videos, and much more.  It is a great experience with using this technology!

Finally, in Science, each classroom is working on a different unit.  Our four units for the school year are Aquatic Ecosystems, Solar System, Matter, and Chemical Reactions.  Ask your child what they are learning about in Science this quarter!

We will be going on our first field trip to Russell Woods at the end of September.  Only two classes go to Russell Woods at a time.  The dates for this trip are September 25th, 28th, and 29th.  Double check with your child’s teacher for the date that your child’s class will be going. Another date and upcoming event is March 5th at 7:00 , which is the 5th grade music concert.  I know this is in the future, but Mrs. Moore wanted us to get the date out to you.  I’m sure notes will be sent home as it gets closer but you can put it on your calendar now if you would like!

Thank you for all of your support at home!
