On February 28, 1803 Thomas Jefferson granted twenty-five hundred dollars to a group of explorers to explore the west. For four years the group found new lands, rivers and people. The Corps were sent to travel the West.
On April 25, 1805 the Corps camped at the future site of Fort Union. They thought they were near the Pacific Ocean by taking an all-water route, North West Passage.
Finding a northwest passage was not the only thing they were to do. They were also to contact and negotiate with Native tribes. They also were to find suitable trading posts and forts.
Finding a new passage across the country, two and a half years after their journey began they returned to St. Louis as national heroes.
