December 1805 During the entire month of December Captain Lewis and Captain Clark are separated with their own parties exploring different areas. As a gift Captain Lewis sent Captain Clark several white weasel tails, moccasins, and black Indian roots. During the first few weeks some of Captain Clark's party have gone hunting and have come back with 18 elk. This meat should last them about 2 weeks. Then the rain spoiled the remainder of the elk meat and more hunting had to be done (they must have hung the meat outside somewhere). Captain Clark's company has to stay where they are for the winter and build cabins. Captain Clark and his men have decided they need to build a fort for protection and privacy. They explained to the Indians that they shut the fort gates at sundown and open them at sunrise again.
January 1806 On the first of January Lewis and Clark woke up to shot for the new year. Their meals consisted of boiled elk and natural water. No other beverage was available during their voyage except for the cool water in rivers and creeks. Lewis and Clark are forced to treat the Native Americans they come across with respect and not to harm them. While Lewis and Clark stopped now and then to take a break from the journey the fleas they encountered were annoying and bothersome. They swarmed into their small huts where Lewis and Clark slept until it was time to continue. During their journey Lewis and Clark came upon many mountains where they were forced to climb to the top. There were also many animals including a whale skeleton reaching 105 feet long!
