The northern union states were Minnesota, Wisconsin     Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts  Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey. The North's strategy was to blockade the trade from the South so they could not trade. And the way to do it was to block the ports. The North also wanted to block off the South's communication.
