The first settlers in North Carolina were from southeastern Virginia. The colony was called Carolina in honor of Charles the First of England. In the 1580s the British established two colonies in North Carolina and they didn't work out . In the 1600s permanent settlers from Virginia began to move to North Carolina colony known as Carolina.
Many were poor farmers raising tobacco and corn. North and South Carolinas split up at 1729, because they were a far distance apart and needed their own government.
