Cherries came to America by ship with settlers of 1600's. Cherry trees were planted by French settlers in cities like Detroit, Vincennes, and other Midwestern settlements. Today's cherries production companies started in the 1800's.

The first tart cherry orchards in Michigan were planted in 1893. Early 1900's the tart cherry industry was established  in states with orchards.
