The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1771 (patented in 1794)  in Georgia to take the seeds out of cotton. Before that people had to take the seeds out by hand which was a long process, where as the cotton gin could separate up to fifty pounds of cotton daily. As a result of the cotton gin, more cotton is grown, and  people don't have to pick out the seeds by hand.
