James Wilson Marshall found gold while working on John Sutter's ranch on January 24, 1848. This discovery influenced the movement of 86,000 people to the California area. These people are nicknamed the 49ers. San Francisco grew from 800 people in 1848 to 50,000 people in 1849! Chinese, Native Americans, African Americans, Mexicans, Irish, French, Germans, and Americans came to try to get some of the California Gold.
