Genoa-Kingston High W.Y.S.E. Team
W.Y.S.E. (Wide World Youth in Science and Engineering) is an academic competition offered throughout the state of Illinois. It began in 1975 at John A. Logan College. The teams were formerly known as J.E.T.S. There are 4 divisions of W.Y.S.E. based on school enrollment. The divisions are under 300, 300-700, 700-1500, and 1500 or more. The competitions start with Regionals, then progress to Sectionals and the State Finals. Now there are over 40 community colleges in Illinois that offer the testing as Regional Sites. The University of Illinois administers the competition through the college of engineering.
W.Y.S.E is an Academic team that is offered to students of Genoa-Kingston High School for those interested in and/or excelling in areas of or relating to Science and Engineering. The tests that are taken are written to challenge the brightest students. All tests for the W.Y.S.E. competition are written by university faculty, who combine High School and Freshman (College) curricula so as to bridge High School and Secondary education. The W.Y.S.E. tests are written in multiple choice format and range from 100 questions (English) to 30 questions (Computer Fundamentals). For each of these tests the students are given 40 minutes to complete the test. The members test in different areas based on there strengths and interests. At these competitions the members can place individually or as a team. For the teams that win regionals or Sectionals they receive trophies and if an individual places they receive an award. The areas that are covered in W.Y.S.E. are:
- Engineering Graphics
- Physics
