INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE 1 year - 1 credit
Freshman (Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors with Instructor Permission)


This orientation course provides an opportunity for students to learn how the agricultural industry is organized; its major components; the economic influences of agriculture at state, national, and international levels; and the scope and types of job opportunities in the agricultural field. (Agricultural jobs account for 21% of all jobs in Illinois and 22% on the National Level.) Applications are presented in animal science, plant/crop science, soil science, natural resources, agribusiness management, agricultural mechanics, environmental science, agricultural careers, life skills, leadership/goal setting and FFA. Students are required to start or develop an SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) by January 1st.

AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE 1 year—1 credit
Pre-requisite: Intro to Agriculture
Sophomores (Juniors & Seniors with Instructor Permission)


This orientation course builds on basic skills and knowledge gained in the Introduction to the Agricultural Industry course. Major units of instruction include agricultural research, soil science, advanced plant science, biotechnology, advanced animal science, food science, and environmental science. Applied science and math skills and concepts will be stressed throughout the course as they relate to each area.

INTRODUCTION TO HORTICULTURE 1 year - 1 credit
Freshman and Sophomores (Juniors & Seniors with Instructor Permission)


This course is designed to develop knowledge and skills in the following areas: using soil and other plant growing media; identifying horticultural plants; propagating horticultural plants;basics of growing horticultural plants in greenhouse and nursery settings, constructing,maintaining and using plant-growing structures; operating, repairing and maintaining equipment used in the horticultural field.

GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION AND FLORAL DESIGN (Offered in Odd Years
2011/2012) 1 year - 1 credit
Pre-requisite: Introduction to Horticulture
Juniors and Seniors

This course builds on experience previously developed in Introduction to Horticulture class. This course focuses on the greenhouse management, greenhouse work, floral design and related segments of the horticulture industry. Major units of study include floriculture plant identification, greenhouse structures, and the culture of greenhouse crops. Also included is care and handling of cut flowers, principles of art applied to floral design, and the mechanics of floral design and sales. Students will get to design their own arrangements. Some arrangements will be available for the students to purchase at cost during the unit.

LANDSCAPING AND TURF GRASS MANAGEMENT (Offered in even years 2010/2011) 1 year - 1 credit
Pre-requisite: Introduction to Horticulture
Juniors and Seniors


This advanced course focuses of the landscape, nursery, and turf segments of the horticulture industry. Units of study include: identifying landscape plants, designing landscape plans, hardscape construction techniques, and installing landscape plants. Also included are nursery production, turf grass production, and maintenance of existing landscapes. Agribusiness units will cover calculating prices for work, managing a horticulture business, advertising, and sales. Improving workplace and computer work skills will be a an area of emphasis.

AGRICULTURE MECHANICS AND TECHNOLOGY (Offered in even years 2010/2011) 1 year - 1 credit
Pre-requisite: Introduction to Agriculture and Ag Science
Juniors and Seniors


This course will concentrate on expanding student’s knowledge and experiences with agricultural mechanics technologies utilized in the agricultural industry. Units of instruction included are: design, construction, fabrication, maintenance, welding, electricity/electronics, internal combustion engines, hydraulics, and employability skills. Careers on agricultural construction engineer, electrician, plumber, welder, equipment designer, parts manager, safety inspector, welder, and other related occupations will be examined. In 4th quarter students
will design, fund, and complete a 5 week project. Examples would be working on a motor bike or making welding tables. Tools will be provided for your project, but materials and parts will not. Students are responsible to the providing their own supplies for their projects. Be sure your project is something you can afford.

AGRICULTURE BUSINESS (Offered in odd years 2011/2012) 1 year - 1 credit
Pre-requisite: Introduction to Agriculture and Ag. Science

This course is designed to develop student knowledge and skills in operating an agribusiness. Instructional units include: establishing, managing , and financing of the agribusiness, marketing and advertising, product development, sales techniques and strategies, communicating with employees and customers, and studying various agricultural companies and career opportunities. Computer software applications and the Internet will be integrated through data management, inventories, and accounting. Student skills will be enhanced in
math, reading comprehension, and writing through agribusiness applications.
