Elkhorn, Montana is a ghost town of the old west. Many of the old buildings, streets, and meeting places are worthy of note. However, the cemetery of this town probably has the most interesting history. Most of the headstones in the graveyard are those of small children who all died on the same date in the same year. It was later found by researchers that they all died at the same time because there was a diphtheria epidemic.
Another fascinating story is of a nine and a ten-year-old boy. In the year of 1889 the two young boys found a quicksilver drum that contained black powder. Usually these types of drums were used during parades and celebrations where people made them explode. The lone drum that they found must have been forgotten some way or another. The boys found out how to ignite the drum and explode it. When they did so they met their early deaths. Later their ashes were buried in the same grave.
