Welcome to fifth grade!  We are looking forward to a wonderful year with your students.

ReadingComing up in September in Reading and Language Arts, we will focus on determining the meaning of figurative language,  the theme of stories and how characters in a story respond to challenges. So far we have worked on Comparing and Contrasting Characters in the story. We will start guided reading after Labor Day, where we will work in small groups at the students’ reading level and use these skills and strategies at the guided reading table.  Students have been practicing guided reading stations and they have been using the chromebooks on websites such as readworks, typing club, and flocabulary.

Math - In Math, the fifth graders are currently working on Topic 1, which is determining place value for whole numbers and decimals.  We will soon take our first test on this topic. Topic 2 in math is adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals. Topic 3 will introduce multiplication.  We strongly encourage parents to be practicing math facts at home with your child. They have to have a good foundation of the multiplication and division facts because it will help them throughout the rest of the year in math.  We will also introduce a new computer program called Reflex, which will also work on multiplication facts. The students may log on to this website to practice at home as well.

Social Studies - In Social Studies, we began to learn about the events that led up to the American Revolution. We will discuss the reasons why the colonists continued to be angry with King George III and how these tensions will eventually lead to the American Revolution.  The students will be working on Google Classroom to submit different projects, graphic organizers, watch videos, and much more. It is a great experience using this technology!

Science - In Science, each classroom is working on Aquatic Ecosystems.  Our four units for the school year are Aquatic Ecosystems, Solar System, Matter, and Chemical Reactions.  Ask your child what they are learning about in Science this quarter!

Please join us at Open House on September 5th  from 6:30-7:45. Thank you for all of your support at home!
