First Grade Newsletter

Week of February 3, 2020

Literacy

We will wrap up our fiction and non-fiction unit about school and (Far from Home and Going to School). We will begin reading the story, The Winners’ Choice. Students will retell story events in order, use illustrations and details to tell about events, use details to tell about characters, and understand the words authors use. 

Please remember the reading homework is 15 minutes of reading five days a week.

Phonics

This week our phonics review sounds will be: sh, th, -al, -all, and a (like o in hot)

Phonics Words to Practice

Attached is a list of words for the week that apply to the skill we are working on. Keep this list at home to practice reading and spelling these words with your student.

Tricky Words of the Month

are, our, go, said, put, into, tree, wear, want, where, were, my, good

Math

We will begin Topic 8 on place value. Students will will make numbers 11-19, make numbers with tens, count with groups of tens and leftovers, and apply place value using tens and ones. Thank you for remembering that math homework attached to the newsletter is due the Friday of that week. Please make sure your child’s name is on it when you turn it in.  

Reminders

On the morning of Thursday, February 6th the 1st graders will be going to the high school for concert practice.  No permission slip is needed as this in-district. On the evening of the concert, please hold onto your child’s coat so that it does not get misplaced.  Please arrive by 6:40pm and if possible, do not get up to leave the concert presentation until all kids have exited the stage for their safety. Thank you for remembering that math homework attached to the newsletter is due the Friday of that week. Please make sure your child’s name is on it when you turn it in.
