First Grade Newsletter

Week of March 2, 2020

Literacy

We will begin reading nonfiction texts about goods and services. Students will focus on the difference between needs and wants. Also, students will discuss the differences between goods and services.

Please remember the reading homework is 15 minutes of reading five days a week. It is very important to remember to log your child’s reading minutes and turn in the monthly reading log at the end of each month.

Phonics/Grammar

This week our phonics review sounds will be: o_e (for example in the word bone), wh, ch, tch and ph (review) We will also begin exploring contraction words. (for example it’s  for it is)

Phonics/ Grammar Words to Practice

Attached is a list of words for the week that apply to the skill we are working on. Keep this list at home in the same place and make a collection of these lists to continue practicing reading and spelling these words with your child to improve reading fluency. 

Tricky Words of the Month

her, together, food, puts, work, working, under, are, our, now, old, once, want, wanted

Math

We will begin Topic 10: We will use models to add with tens and ones. This topic includes strategies for double digit addition. 

Thank you for remembering that math homework attached to the newsletter is due the Friday of that week. Please make sure your child’s name is on it when you turn it in.  Please continue to practice basic math facts at home with your student. Math fact fluency helps students to be more confident as we progress in our skills. 

Important:

Spring weather is very unpredictable. Remember to have your student dress in layers. We often have big fluctuations in temperature during the spring. It  is a good idea to have students wear a coat. Also, keep a hat and gloves in their backpack just in case temps change throughout the day.
