5th Grade February/March Newsletter

We can’t believe it’s the middle of the third quarter!  We have so much to still learn before the end of the year!

Reading

We are currently working on Unit 3 in our ReadyGen curriculum.  This unit is science based. We have been reading books on the solar system and space.  The students have been really excited about this topic.  The skills we will work on will be the main idea and key details, theme, figurative language, cause and effect, visualizations and imagery. We are also working on a science narrative and then we will create another informative essay.  We continue to respond to text daily and support our ideas with text evidence.  Please ask your child what they are learning about in ReadyGen.

Math

In Math, the fifth graders are currently working on Topic 7, which is adding and subtracting fractions, finding common denominators, and simplifying fractions. We will soon work on Topic 8, which is multiplying fractions.  Topic 9 will be dividing fractions as well.  Please continue working at home on Reflexmath.com to help with memorizing math facts.  Moby max is also a great website for extra math practice.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we are in chapter 10 and 11, which covers the Bill of Rights, the War of 1812, and the Lewis and Clark expedition and the expansion of our country.   The students will be working on Google Classroom to submit different projects, graphic organizers, watch videos, and much more.  It is a great experience using this technology!

Science

In Science, we are working on our next unit, which is the solar system.  It goes along with our unit in our Readygen unit.  We are learning about stars, planets, moon phases, and much more.  The final units will be matter and chemical reactions.   Ask your child what their favorite part of our science unit has been!

Thank you for all of your support.  Have a great Spring Break!
