5th Grade Newsletter - October

We are almost to the end of the first quarter.  The students have been working hard and are into a good routine at this point.  Please remember the weather is changing and the students need to be dressed appropriately for recess.

Reading:

We are almost to the end of our first module in our new Readygen reading curriculum.  We have finished three stories and are now comparing characters and themes across texts.  The students have been working on responding to texts and citing evidence. Also, we are currently creating a narrative short story applying all of the elements that we have learned during our whole group reading time.  Students have been practicing all of these skills during guided reading stations.

Math

In Math, the fifth graders are currently working on Topics 3 and 4, which is multiplying multi-digit numbers and decimals.  Topics 5 and 6 will work on long division. We strongly encourage parents to be practicing math facts at home with your child.  Reflexmath.com is a great website that students can use at home to continue to practice math facts.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we began chapter 8 which is about the American Revolution.  We will discuss the Declaration of Independence and the major battles in this war.  The students will continue to use Google Classroom to submit different projects, graphic organizers, watch videos, and much more.  It is a great experience using this technology!

Science

In Science, each classroom is working on Aquatic Ecosystems. We have just begun to build our ponds and will observe organisms such as snails, daphnia, black worms, mosquito fish, and dragonfly nymphs.  We enjoyed our field trip to Russell Woods to spend a day learning about our environment in an outdoor education setting.

Please continue to sign your child’s agenda or calendar for reading minutes.  They must read 3,000 minutes to attend the Kane County Cougar game in May.
