Reading

We are excited to explore Unit 3, Module A & B of ReadyGen.  This module focuses on understanding that different types of texts can be used to analyze similar topics and ideas.  We will be discussing natural phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.

Math

This month, we are working on generating equivalent fractions using different methods. We generate equivalent fractions using models, number lines, multiplication, and division. After we master equivalent fractions, we will start learning how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators.  Adding and subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping can be quite complex, so students need to check their work before turning it in.  Please have your child practice their math facts online using Reflex or with flashcards at home on a daily basis.

Writing

In this unit ofReadyGen writing, we were focused on persuasive or opinion writing.  The students have had lots of opportunities to practice persuading the reader to agree with their opinions on various topics.  Our performance-based writing assessment requires them to choose their favorite Native American tribe, listing reasons and examples from the text to support their opinion. Please make sure your child is practicing from their weekly word list for the spelling tests on Fridays.

Science/ Social Studies

In science, we are working on earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis as well as the rock cycle and earth’s processes (each class focuses on a different topic due to supplies). In Social Studies, some classrooms are working on the Northeast, while others are beginning to study the Southeast region.
